For the past three years, we have created portraits for “The Memory Project”. This nonprofit works in partnership with aid organizations to support youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence and extreme poverty.
To help build awareness, empathy and a shared sense of humanity, art programs in the US are provided images of these children to illustrate. Later, the works we create are hand delivered to each child. Our wish is that each portrait brings a little bit of joy into their life, and serves as a reminder that friends far away in Eagle River Alaska care about their safety and well-being.
I am inspired daily by the character of my students, and their capacity to treat each other with kindness and compassion. I am very proud of the effort they put into each of these artworks. I continue to grow as a teacher, and as a person because of the time I spend with them.
Our hope is that each artwork reminds you of the difficult conditions some children face, and that they inspire you to learn more and help. We hope our efforts find each of our new friends safe from harms way.
